Internship Program for the World Trade Organization. The goal of the World Trade Organization Internship Program is to offer postgraduate university students an internship opportunity in order to help them get real-world experience and a better understanding of the multilateral trade system. The program offers candidates a finite number of slots continuously throughout the year.

2022/2023 World Trade Organization Internship Program

The duties of interns are to increase their knowledge of the WTO and trade policy in general. The precise nature of the duties to be performed during the internship time will be decided by the requirements of the hiring department for the intern.

Benefits of the World Trade Organization Internship Program:

An agreement specifying the terms of service and details of any compensation will be entered into between the intern and the Director of Human Resources. Paid interns receive a daily allowance of CHF 60 (including weekends and holidays falling within the selected period). No other reward of any kind is paid.

Under normal circumstances, internships take place in Geneva, Switzerland. However, remote internships from another country may be considered during the COVID pandemic, and the conditions of these remote internships may differ from those held in Geneva. Travel expenses to and from Geneva cannot be reimbursed by the WTO and such travel is not covered by the organization’s insurance. Interns are responsible for their own sickness and accident insurance for the duration of the internship.

Eligibility Criteria:

In order to participate in the World Trade Organization Internship Program, candidates must have the following profile:

  • be a national of a WTO member state or a country or customs territory involved in accession negotiations.
  • have completed a bachelor’s degree in the relevant field (e.g. economics, law, political science, international relations) and
  • have completed at least one year of postgraduate study.
  • they are between 21 and 30 years old.

A list of suitable candidates is maintained from which interns are selected. In addition to the regular internship program, there may also be a need to hire interns at short notice for specific tasks. These recruits will also be selected from the list. Names will not be kept on the list for more than one year.
